Enid Blyton is best known for her classic adventure stories. I have only recently discovered that she also published poetry for children. For this knowledge I am indebted to The Lady magazine’s 11th August 2017 issue which included a feature on Enid Blyton, informing us that her first published book was poetry. Child Whispers came out in 1922. My research suggests that if you want a first edition of this book you will have to pay over £2,000 for one. I guess they are pretty rare! However, her later volume The Enid Blyton Poetry book, which appeared in 1934, is more widely available and affordable. This is organised on a seasonal theme, with eight poems for each month of the year. There was a special school edition, suggesting the verses were popular with teachers. Later editions from the 1940’s and 1950’s are also around. If you would like to read her poems easily and for free, however, the website World of Blyton has quite a number to view.
